Feb. 17th Ron May’s Memories of Sunset Cliffs and OB

Thurs.,  Feb. 17, 2011, 7 p.m., At PL Methodist Church, 1984 Sunset Cliffs Blvd.OBHS presents Historian Ron May, Memories of Sunset Cliffs and Ocean Beach— from 1955 Through 1962
One thing I have learned doing history work is that even though a bunch of people lived through the same time period, they all saw things through different eyes. I saw Sunset Cliffs and Ocean Beach as a child and teenager between 1955 and 1962 and off and on again through 1972. I will be talking about exploration of Sunset Cliffs and the remains of Albert Spaulding’s Esplanade, caves and staircases, the ruins of the Theosophical Society, U.S. Army Fort Rosecrans bunkers and trenches, a wrecked Mexican fishing boat at the foot of Hill Street, mischief and hijinx in the hills, and fond memories of Ocean Beach water sports at the Flood Control Channel.
In 1981, Ron lead a team of archaeologists in the discovery of a lost 18th century Spanish fort on the Naval Submarine Base on Point Loma and have been working out there on weekends for the past 30-years.
Please join us Feb. 17 to hear Ron’s first-hand accounts about Sunset Cliffs and Ocean Beach.
