Louis T. Williams, April 5, 1936 to Nov. 26, 2010 passed away November 26th, after a brave battle with lung cancer. Louie was known for his kindness and generosity and will be missed by all who knew him. He was born in San Diego. After spending his childhood in Maine, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served his country proudly. Later in life he returned to San Diego, finally settling in Ocean Beach. He is survived by his wife Kathi (a longtime O.B. resident), daughter Simone and son-in-law Mike, grandchildren Yvette, Ricky and Phillip, six great grandchildren, sister Ronnie and brother in-law Cecil, brother Russ and sister-in-law Vicky, in addition to a large extended family, almost everyone in OB. Louie will always be remembered by the Ocean Beach community for his love of yard sales, antiques, playing pool and the beautiful “Hidden” garden, that was featured at a Ocean Beach Historical Program and at the end of the Historical walks over the last few years. He and his garden were featured on Wonderland, had won awards, and enchanted all that visited his Hidden Garden.”

A celebration of Louie’s life was held December 1^st at Beardsley-Mitchell Funeral Home, where tears met smiles in the many fond and humorous memories of Louis. The thoughts of his flowers will forever be in our hearts

The Ocean Beach Historical Society Presents: Save Our Heritage Organization— Over Four Decades of Historic Preservation in San Diego County
The SOHO program by Ashley Christensen, will include a compelling documentary film by Dan Soderberg about  SOHO’s pivotal role is seen in its saving of architectural icons and the importance of future historic preservation.  San Diegan Soderberg, spent nearly a year interviewing SOHO members and staff for the documentary. He also researched the group’s four decades of achievements through archives, libraries and hundreds of photographs. “There is no one SOHO story. There are many stories and all of them are compelling,” Soderberg said in an interview. “SOHO people tend to devote every ounce of their being to the cause, so it was a challenge to pick the stories to tell.” Join us in learning about many of the committed historians in San Diego at our Nov. 18th meeting. Admission is free.

Oct, 21, 2010, OBHS presented Lynn Izidoro Guidi, The Portuguese 100 —Plus Years of in San Diego Lynn  is a native San Diegan, born & raised in Point Loma, 1st generation American. parents immigrated from Portugal, the Island of Madeira in the early 1950’s. She has served on the United Portuguese SES Board as President and Director. Her program included  lovely festa outfits, historoical fishing clips and many wonderful historic pictures and festa stories. Who is Buried in Presidio Park?
Thurs.,  Sept. 16, 2010, 7 p.m. at PL United Methodist Church, 1984 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., O.B.

Noted historian Richard L. Carrico will discuss life and death at the Presidio de San Diego, Alta California’s first European settlement from 1769-1875.  In this interesting and highly informative talk Richard will tell you who lived and died at the presidio, how they were buried, how many of the more than 200 persons who were buried in the camposanto were excavated by archaeologists, and when was Alta California’s first non-Indian cemetery abandoned.

Want to know how many “true” full-blooded Spaniards lived at the presidio?How many Indians worked and died there?  Who was the Indian leader imprisoned for weeks and upon his death buried at the presidio?  Who were the children interred at the presidio?  What American sea captain and his mixed-blood daughter is buried on Presidio Hill?  Who is the American mountain man and fur trapper buried in non-consecrated ground? All of this and more will presented in an engaging visual lecture.

Richard Carrico teaches at San Diego State University Department of American Indian Studies and
Recuerdos Research.His extensive research and writing about our local history and Indian cultures mixes intrigue with historical events that will make for a memorable evening. Please join us Sept. 16th.

OBHS presented Cartoonist & Fine Artist Michael Dormer, Aug. 19, 2010. OB resident Michael Dormer at is know  among the surf community for his “Hot Curl” surf cartoons, and in the art community for his fine art (shows at Falling Sky Pottery in OB). He provided a night of stand-up comedy in his presentation… that included a peak at “Snail Boy” and ended in a song he wrote and sang.

Also included were clips from a TV  interview of Dormer, by another well-known OB resident, San Diego Libraries Curator Mark Lugo from the nationally-recognized San Diego Public Library’s Visual Arts Television series. OBHS presented: VONN MARIE MAY, Thurs., July 15th, 2010
Vonn Marie May’s memories of OB are filled with humorous and interesting stories about the community and its many characters. Vonn’s mom was one of the “Hotties” during the era when the Arizona and other bars were filled with babes clad in muumuus. Vonn also touched on the woman/nurses in the military and the challenges they faced. Vonn has extensive knowledge of OB, PL and SD histories. Professionally, she has been on the boards of many historical organizations and has helped get some of our most important sites designated. She also helps lead historical walks around the communities of San Diego.

June 17, 2010, OBHS presented: Derek Casady, who gave his perspective on our community of OB and coastal/CA issues. He gave examples of how people could become actively involved community members.  His varied careers include: publishing, politics and natural foods.

A very successful “OB Exposed” and we would like to thank all that participated.
